Background & literature

Origin

Selank comes from the same Russian institute and the same design logic as Semax, but from a different parent molecule. It is a synthetic analog of tuftsin — a four-residue immunomodulatory fragment (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) of the IgG heavy chain, discovered at Tufts University in the early 1970s and named after it. Selank adds a Pro-Gly-Pro tail to tuftsin for the same enzymatic-stability reason Semax carries one, producing a heptapeptide. It has been studied in Russia since the 1990s and appears in the literature under the development code TP-7.

What has been characterised

Characterised in rodent models with attention to the GABAergic and monoaminergic systems, and examined in the literature as a peptide-based anxiolytic — a 2018 review in Protein & Peptide Letters addresses the molecular aspects specifically. Published rodent work has examined it in combination with diazepam under unpredictable chronic mild stress conditions, and separately in a morphine-withdrawal model. Because it derives from tuftsin, an immunologically active fragment, part of the literature concerns immune signalling rather than behaviour. All animal work; Selank is not FDA-approved for any use.
