Ipamorelin was described in 1998 by a group at Novo Nordisk and introduced in the literature as “the first selective growth hormone secretagogue.” The selectivity claim is the historically interesting part: earlier secretagogues in this class also produced measurable effects on other pituitary hormones, and ipamorelin was characterised as acting on growth-hormone release without that broader profile in the models tested. It is a synthetic pentapeptide.
Characterised as an agonist at the ghrelin receptor (GHS-R1a) — a ghrelin mimetic — on anterior pituitary cells. Subsequent preclinical work examined it in rodent models, including a rat model of postoperative ileus, and in studies of nitrogen balance and urea synthesis. This is animal and in-vitro pharmacology. Ipamorelin is not FDA-approved for any human use, and growth-hormone secretagogues appear on the WADA Prohibited List.
