Growth Factor Analogue Peptides
Both compounds here are engineered variants of insulin-like growth factor 1, and both exist to solve the same problem: native IGF-1 is bound almost immediately by IGF-binding proteins, which makes it difficult to study. IGF-1 LR3 answers that with two changes at once — an arginine substitution at position 3 that sharply reduces binding-protein affinity, and a 13-amino-acid N-terminal extension. MGF takes a different route: it is a splice variant of the IGF-1 gene, distinguished by its own C-terminal sequence, and the pegylated form extends a half-life that would otherwise be measured in minutes. The distinction matters when reading the literature, because papers on native IGF-1, on LR3 and on MGF are not interchangeable. Characterisation is in cell-culture and rodent models.
