✦ Research Notes

Background & literature

Origin

AOD-9604 is a synthetic fragment of human growth hormone corresponding to residues 177–191, the C-terminal region, with an added tyrosine. It came out of work by Frank Ng and colleagues at Monash University in Australia, who were investigating which structural domain of the growth-hormone molecule was responsible for which of its several activities. The 1993 paper on the synthetic C-terminal sequence is the founding publication; a 2000 study in J Mol Endocrinol examined the domain in Zucker rats.

What has been characterised

Characterised as a growth-hormone C-terminal fragment. The research premise is that this domain acts independently of the growth-hormone receptor and does not carry the receptor-mediated activity of the intact hormone — that separation of one domain from the whole is the reason the fragment was studied at all. A 2015 Drug Testing and Analysis paper examined its detection and in-vitro metabolism, work done in an anti-doping context. Rodent and in-vitro literature. Not FDA-approved for any use, and it is a compound under active regulatory attention; see lib/data.ts on why it is carried.
