✦ Research Notes

Background & literature

Origin

This is not a distinct molecule with a discovery history of its own. It is a co-formulation of two separately characterised peptides — the gastric pentadecapeptide BPC-157, isolated at the University of Zagreb and described in synthetic form in 1993, and TB-500, a synthetic fragment of thymosin beta-4, whose parent protein was sequenced from bovine thymus in 1981. Each has its own literature; the combination does not.

What has been characterised

The two constituents are characterised separately and by different mechanisms: BPC-157 through angiogenic and nitric-oxide signalling in rodent and cell-culture models, thymosin beta-4 through G-actin sequestration and cytoskeletal dynamics in vitro. No peer-reviewed literature characterises this specific co-formulation as a single entity, and no published work establishes an interaction between them. Anything said about the blend is inference from the two component literatures, not a finding about the blend. Neither constituent is FDA-approved for human use, and thymosin beta-4 appears on the WADA Prohibited List. See the individual BPC-157 and TB-500 entries for the primary sources.
