✦ Research Notes

Background & literature

Origin

Delta sleep-inducing peptide is a nonapeptide isolated in 1977 by Guido Schoenenberger and Marcel Monnier in Switzerland, from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits in an induced sleep state. The isolation method is the memorable part: they transfused blood from sleeping animals into recipients and looked for a transferable factor. The peptide has proven durably mysterious — a 2006 review in the Journal of Neurochemistry is titled, accurately, “a still unresolved riddle.”

What has been characterised

Despite nearly fifty years of study, no receptor for DSIP has been identified, and its endogenous function is not established. Published work describes effects observed in various animal models, but without a characterised receptor or a reproducible mechanism the literature remains inconclusive — which is what the “unresolved riddle” framing refers to. We would rather tell you that than manufacture a mechanism. Not FDA-approved for any use.
