Background & literature
Origin
Snap-8 is the trade name for acetyl octapeptide-3, an eight-residue peptide developed as a cosmetic ingredient and marketed as an extension of the acetyl hexapeptide-8 (Argireline) concept. Both were designed around the SNARE complex — the protein assembly that mediates vesicle fusion at the neuromuscular junction. A PubMed search for acetyl octapeptide-3 and Snap-8 returned no indexed primary literature on 23 August 2026.
What has been characterised
The design rationale, taken from the cosmetic-science literature on the related hexapeptide, is competitive interference with SNARE complex assembly. We could not find primary published characterisation of this specific octapeptide, so we are not going to describe its mechanism as though it had been demonstrated. It is a cosmetic ingredient, regulated as such, and is not FDA-approved for any therapeutic use.
