Background & literature
Origin
Human chorionic gonadotropin is not a synthetic research peptide but a naturally occurring human glycoprotein hormone, identified in the 1920s and among the earliest hormones to be used as the basis of a diagnostic test. Structurally it is a heterodimer: an α-subunit shared with LH, FSH and TSH, and a β-subunit that is unique to hCG and determines which receptor the intact dimer engages. That shared-α architecture is why the glycoprotein hormone family is studied as a group.
What has been characterised
Characterised as an agonist at the luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR), a class-A G-protein-coupled receptor. Cryo-EM structures of full-length glycoprotein hormone receptor signalling complexes, published in Nature in 2021, resolved how the hormone engages the receptor’s large extracellular domain and how that engagement is transmitted to the transmembrane bundle. Supplied here as a research material; hCG appears on the WADA Prohibited List.
