Background & literature
Origin
PT-141 (bremelanotide) is a cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-MSH, and it exists because of an unplanned observation. Researchers at the University of Arizona working on melanotan-II — a melanocortin agonist developed as a tanning agent — noted effects in early testing that were unrelated to pigmentation. Bremelanotide was developed from that lead as a metabolite of melanotan-II.
What has been characterised
Characterised as a non-selective melanocortin receptor agonist with activity at MC1R, MC3R and MC4R, acting at central melanocortin receptors rather than peripherally.
