Cytoprotection describes a cell’s capacity to withstand insult, and the peptides grouped here were characterised in that literature rather than in any single tissue. BPC-157 came out of a question asked at the University of Zagreb in 1975 — if the stomach lining survives its own acid, is there something protective in gastric juice? — and the synthetic pentadecapeptide was formally described in 1993. TB-500 arrived by a different route: thymosin beta-4 was sequenced from bovine thymus in 1981 as a presumed thymic hormone, then reclassified once it was identified as a major G-actin sequestering protein. That reclassification, from immune factor to regulator of the cytoskeleton, is why it appears in this literature at all. What the class shares is a mechanism described at the level of the cell — angiogenic signalling, nitric oxide interaction, actin dynamics — studied almost entirely in rodent and cell-culture models.
